Top Songs of 2019: 1-20

Apple Music link

20. “Waylon Jennings Live!”
The Mountain Goats
In League With Dragons

"Full of firearms / and flash drives / full of passports / and international money orders"

FX's You're the Worst got it so close to perfect in the series finale with their MG song. Yes, the two leads are the closest we've seen to Darnielle's alpha couple on screen.  But "No Children" doesn't fit nearly as well as the more hopeful (but still totally fucked up) "Old College Try".
19. “Only Child (single)”
Tierra Whack

Tierra Whack follows the acclaim of 2018's 15-minute, 15-song Whack World by showing that she can full length songs as well. The desk lamp on the single cover is so random.
18. “New Shapes”
Diplo feat. Octavian

We could do without the pseudo DJ airhorn ("pew pew pew") but at least Diplo doesn't audio watermark his songs with a ton of garbage like DJ Khaled.
17. “All For the Life of the City”
The Flaming Lips feat. Mick Jones
Kings Mouth: Music and Songs

The Flaming Lips and Mick Jones collaborating on an entire album is pretty much a dream combo, so it was a bummer when we learned that Mick was only the story's narrator. Fortunately, the album was perhaps our favorite by Wayne and Co in over a decade. Still, sing Michael sing
16. “Capacity”
Charly Bliss
Young Enough

"I can barely keep myself afloat when I'm not saving you"
15. “All to the Wind”
Angelo de Augostine
Tomb

The influences are obvious here (including album producer Doveman), but they don't take away from the timeless sound and execution.
14. “Narcisc0”
Rina Mushonga
In a Galaxy

"Are we done talking / 'cause I'm so tired of all your lies"

13. “The Modern Leper”
Julien Baker
Tiny Changes: A Celebration of Frightened Rabbit's 'The Midnight Organ Fight'

Tiny Changes is an album of TMOF covers and was planned and recorded largely before Scott Hutchinson's 2018 death. It is a great reminder how good TMOF is. "Head Rolls Off" has always been our favorite (#11 song of 2008, but now on the all-time favorite 100 list) but "The Modern Leper", "My Backwards Walk", "Good Arms" and "The Twist" are pretty classic as well. Julien Baker's take is the only new version that challenges, or even improves, on the original. So much hurt in that dude.
12. “Lebanon”
J.S. Ondara
Tales of America

"Oh Lebanon / life is brief / don't sit alone / in your constant fear"
11. “Hotel Bar”
The Tallest Man on Earth
I Love You. It's a Fever Dream.

The weariest song of the decade, not just musically but lyrically -- it is about mustering enough energy to go down to the hotel bar or just go to bed.  It's left unsaid, but he totally goes to bed. Been there.
10. “Not (edit)”
Big Thief
Two Hands

"Not what you really wanted / nor the mess in your purse / nor the bed that is haunted / with the blanket of thirst / it's not the HUNGER revealing / nor the ricochet in the cave / nor the hand that is healing / nor the nameless grave"
9. “Take Me To the Light (single)”
Francis and the Lights feat. Bon Iver and Kanye West

As noted in prior years, the only thing we like more than Francis's music is when it is accompanied with some highly choreographed Vote for Pedro dance moves. Whether it is solo in a field, with Bon Iver or with Chance the Rapper.  So the lack of an opportunity to see Kanye do some smooth spins and invisible rope gathering is a real let down.
8. “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have - but i have it”
Lana Del Rey
Norman Fucking Rockwell

"Writing in blood on my walls 'cause the ink in my pen don't work in my notepad / don't ask if I'm happy / you know that I'm not / but at best, I can say I'm not sad"
7. “Bad Guy”
Billie Eilish
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?

Duh.
6. “101 FM”
Little Simz
GREY Area

Impressive lyrical flow and delivery against a killer loop. Simz sounds bone tired narrating her teenage years and early modest dreams which seemed big at the time (new era caps, PS2, buying weed from a Jamaican).
5. “Little Trouble (single)”
Better Oblivion Community Center

"For clumsy ballerinas with Dad's blank check / there's a place in Altadena that sounds perfect / well, they'll let you be the swan even with missteps / and clap until your body is sore"

This is all about the continuous build for us. Would be a great song to catch live if Connor and Phoebe ever hit the road together (again).
4. “The Barrel”
Aldous Harding
Designer

The song is just so damned lovely and it is ranked too highly for us to spend time focused on the video ... but let's focus on the video. We'll give you a minute. You back? What the hell was that, right? Its a series of gloriously weird dancing gifs, then the monster, then, huh? It even has great youtube comments. Youtube comments! You're welcome.
3. “Sing Along”
Sturgill Simpson
SOUND & FURY

"Compromise is made out of peace / but history is made out of violence"

Sturgill drops the typical alt-country for full-on ZZ Top, but ZZ was never this badass. Perfect match w/ album cover.
2. “This Life”
Vampire Weekend
Father of the Bride

FotB may have been our favorite album of the year, but it is clear that Rostam's departure left a bit of a hole. Still, Koenig can construct the hell out of a song. The turns of phrase here, the build to the final verse, the noodle guitar solo, the voice modulated Haims, it all kills.
1. “Milionària”
Rosalia
Fucking Money Man - single

2020 plan: more Catalan, less FMM.

40. “Hypersonic Missles”
Sam Fender
Sam Fender

"Oh silver tongue suits and cartoons / the rule my world"
39. “This World is So Fucked Up (But I Ain't Ever Giving Up On It)”
Michael Franti & Spearhead
Stay Human, Vol 2

38. “Haunted House”
Sir Babygirl
Crush on Me

37. “Follow the Water”
Calexico & Iron & Wine
Years to Burn

Fourteen years ago, Sam Beam and Calexico released the In the Reins EP and "Sixteen, Maybe Less" came in at #3 on our first ever music list. Their second album together doesn't hit the same heights but was a welcome 2019 surprise.

36. “Meet Again”
Maxo Cream
Brandon Banks

"You can't be there like a father and its fucking with you mentally / court-appointed lawyer got my bro a half a century"
35. “A List Of All the Virtues”
Generationals
Reader as Detective

34. “Faithless”
Operators
Radiant Dawn

33. “Research Cognitivity”
The Derevolutions
It's a Derevolution, Baby

32. “Pretty”
Ingrid Michaelson
Stranger Songs

76% of young girls today (including ours) believe being told they do something "like a girl" is a compliment. Progress.
31. “Exits (edit)”
Foals
Part 1 Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost

30. “What Can We Do”
Anderson.Paak feat. Nate Dogg
Ventura
29. “Magic Marker”
Craig Finn
I Need a New War

Craig Finn released a new Hold Steady album and a solo album this year. While we generally prefer the fuller sound of THS, they can't compete with the 50's style backing vocals here.
28. “Gone”
Charli XCX feat. Christine and the Queens
Charli

27. “Hail Mary”
Kevin Morby
Oh My God

26. “Coming Home (single)”
Pusha T feat. Lauryn Hill

A tough call between this track and the lyric version of the Sucession theme. The lack of Greg-related puns in the latter probably cost it a spot.
25. “Dammit”
Colleen Green
Blink 182's "Dude Ranch" as played by Colleen Green

Colleen Green has been a favorite here. Blink 182 isn't. Her significantly stripped down version of their second album caused us to reevaluate things. We did. Nothing changed.  (Not on streaming services, play here)
24. “Closer Than a Brother”
Josh Garrels
Chrysaline

23. “Don't Be So Hard on Yourself”
Alex Lahey
The Best of Luck Club

"Oh, sometimes / you get a little teary 'cause you were sick of feeling that / all your time / is waiting to be weighted by something you were missing"
22. “When I Die
Beirut
Gallipoli

"When I die / I want to travel light"
21. “Seventeen”
Sharon van Etten
Remind Me Tomorrow

Top Songs of 2019: 41-60

60. “Supply and Demand”
Wilder Woods
Wilder Woods

Coming in at #60 is pretty impressive considering the federally mandated 40 spot penalty for blue-eyed soul

59. “Violence (single)”
Grimes feat. i_o

58. “Valley to LA”
Bleached
Don't You Think You've Had Enough

"Through the gray and decay of this beautiful place"

57. “Hard of Hearing”
Radical Face
Therapy EP

56. “Kantori Ongaku”
Devendra Banhart
Ma

Japanese lesson #1: ongaku is a native Japanese word meaning "music", while kantori is a transliteration of the English word "country" and is written in the katakana phonetic alphabet.

55. “Survival (single)”
Bone Thugs-n-Harmony

"Witness a survivor / the man is strictly the provider / the ambitions of a rider"

54. “Surefire (single)”
Wilderado

53. “Marigolds”
Kishi Bashi
Omoiyari

Japanese lesson #2: Omoiyari means "compassion" while Kishi Bashi means nothing (Kaoru Ishibashi = K. Ishibashi = Kishi Bashi)

52. “Somebody's Baby”
Sidney Gish
Animal Kingdom: Jackson

51. “Back in My Body”
Maggie Rogers
Heard It In A Past Life

50. “Wasted Youth”
Jenny Lewis
On the Line

.

49. “All My Words”
The Way Down Wanderers
Illusions

"And if the grass has never been greener / you're sure to find the dirt won't be either"
48. “Feet (edit)”
The Fat White Family

47. “Hold My Breath Until I Die"
Tegan and Sara
Hey, I'm Just Like You

46. “Die Waiting”
Beck
Hyperspace

Japanese lesson #3: As with kantori in lesson #1, the album art here is a katakana transliteration of the English album title (haipasupasu). Congratulations, you are now fluent. Motto panakeku!
45. “A World So Full of Love (single)”
Shakey Graves

44. “La Vie en Rose (single)”
Lucy Dacus

43. “Motivation (single)”
Normani

42. “Use This Gospel”
Kanye West feat. Clipse and Kenny G
JESUS IS KING

41. “All Some Kind of Dream”
Josh Ritter
Fever Breaks

"For it seems that these are darker days / than any others that we've seen / oh, how we wished that we weren't wide awake / and this was all some kind of dream"
